Johnny Depp returns to the big screen in another Hunter S Thompson novel, The Rum Diaries. Starring as journalist Paul Kemp (but really, Hunter S. Thompson), who moves from New York to Puerto Rico and becomes embroiled in a complicated affair with a woman named Chenault (Amber Heard). As you would assume, much rum is imbibed throughout the tale.
Thompson wrote the novel in the 1960s, when he was only in his twenties. It did not see release until 1998. In honour of its delayed release, the film version has had a similarly tumultuous production history. After a decade in development hell, shooting began in March of 2009. The Rum Diary marks director Bruce Robinson’s first film in almost twenty years.
